NHS Nottinghamshire are asking local people to write to their MP in support of the Bill asking for a ban for smoking in private vehicles where there are children present. The Early Day Motion (EDM) expresses support for Alex Cunningham’s Ten Minute Rule Bill to ban smoking in cars with children. The 2ndReading of the Bill is taking place on Friday 20 January and I strongly encourage you to support the Bill should it go to a vote.

In support of their campaign, NHS Nottinghamshire have put together some background papers around Tobacco and Nottinghamshire. The text below is an extract from some of the information.
Since the smoking ban in all enclosed public places in 2007 there has been evidence of the reduction in tobacco consumption and exposure to second-hand smoke. The Cochrane review 2010 concluded that the introduction of the legislative smoking ban has led to a reduction in exposure to Second Hand Smoke and improvement in health outcomes.[1] Research suggests that 30% of smokers smoke in their vehicle and over half of all journeys made by children aged 16 and under are in private vehicles, suggesting that private vehicles are a source of exposure to Second Hand Smoke.[2]
