Support the Bill to protect Children and Young people from the harms of tobacco smoke

NHS Nottinghamshire  are asking local people to write to their MP in support of the Bill asking for a ban for smoking in private vehicles where there are children present.  The Early Day Motion (EDM) expresses support for Alex Cunningham’s Ten Minute Rule Bill to ban smoking in cars with children. The 2ndReading of the Bill is taking place on Friday 20 January and I strongly encourage you to support the Bill should it go to a vote.

In support of their campaign, NHS Nottinghamshire have put together some background papers around Tobacco and Nottinghamshire.  The text below is an extract from some of the information.

Since the smoking ban in all enclosed public places in 2007 there has been evidence of the reduction in tobacco consumption and exposure to second-hand smoke. The Cochrane review 2010 concluded that the introduction of the legislative smoking ban has led to a reduction in exposure to Second Hand Smoke and improvement in health outcomes.[1] Research suggests that 30% of smokers smoke in their vehicle and over half of all journeys made by children aged 16 and under are in private vehicles, suggesting that private vehicles are a source of exposure to Second Hand Smoke.[2]

Women’s Aid Intergrated Services

Women’s Aid Intergrated Services have had a few busy and successful which has included winning the tender to provide Independent Domestic Violence Advocates (IDVA’s) for the South of the county which includes Gedling.  The service started in October 2011 and will continue to provide high quality specialist services in the south of Nottinghamshire.

We are also supporting NDVF to provide a male IDVA to help male domestic violence survivors in Nottingham city.  The new IDVA role will help to fill a recognised gap in services for men and we are happy to support this.

In Nottingham, we were awarded a grant to provide children’s workers in all refuges over the summer.  This has been a valuable service helping to keep children stimulated, safe and occupied during a very difficult time in their lives. It also helps to give mothers the time they need to reassess their own lives. Children’s work is continuing in our refuge after the summer as we have acquired funding for a children’s worker from October 2011. We are really pleased to be able to provide this essential ongoing support to children.

Working closely with others is essential in tackling domestic abuse. We work with many agencies but we are always keen to hear from anyone wanting to work with us in any way.

They also have a brand new website and a glossy newsletter.  Check out their services at http://www.wais.org.uk/home.php
